John M. Souza 66, pioneer Merced and Mariposa county resident, succumbed last night in a local hospital following a lingering illness.

Souza was a native of Cathay valley in Mariposa county, but spent most of his life in the Merced area and for many years operated with his brother the Bear Service Station. In the early 1900's he was employed by the old Murray and Vincent Hardware firm and later worked for the J. R. Flynn hardware.

Services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the W. C. Bradford chapel under auspices of Yosemite Lodge 99, F and AM. The Rev. Donald Baldwin will officiate with interment following in Masonic cemetery.

Souza is survived by his widow, Myrtle; one daughter, Mrs. Madeline Bunning, Mariposa; one brother, Tony M. Souza of Merced; and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Praire of Merced and Mrs. Marion Silveria of Santa Cruz.

The deceased was an active member of Yosemite Lodge 99, F and AM; Stockton Scottish Rites Bodies; Aahmes Shrine Temple; Merced Lodge, I.O.O.F.; and the Merced-Mariposa Shriners.
