PIONEER MERCED LADY DIES IN OAKLAND
Mrs. Mary Smith, for many years a well-known and respected resident of Merced county, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Clara Gray, in Oakland on Thursday morning of this week following a lengthy illness due to the infirmities of old age.
Mrs. Smith, who was a native of Ireland and 76 years of age, came to Merced county with her husband, the late James Smith, about 40 years ago and resided for many years in the Lone Tree district, later removing to Rotterdam Colony, Mr. Smith died in November 1917, since which time she had made her home in Oakland with her daughter. She was among the best known pioneer residents of Merced county and had many friends who regret her passing.
She leaves four daughters and three sons, namely: Mrs. Emily Kaufman of Winnemucca, Nev., Mrs. Julia Huntley, Mrs. Clara Gray and Miss Margaret Smith of Oakland, James Smith of Los Banos, George Smith of Reno, Nev., and Gordon Smith of Sacramento. Her sister, the late Mrs. M. Rahilly, died several years ago.
The funeral will be held from the Catholic Church this Saturday morning, and interment will be made in the family plot in the Catholic cemetery.
