CIVIL WAR VET DIES IN MERCED
Funeral services for James L. Pool, 89, Civil war veteran and secretary to Gen. U. S. Grant, who died last night at a local hospital, will be held at 2:30 o'clock Friday afternoon at the Janss and Ivers mission chapel. The services will be conducted by the local post of the American Legion. Burial will be in Asphodel cemetery.
Pool was said to be the sole surviving member of company K, 49th regiment of the Jeffersonville, Ind., volunteers in the Civil war. He enlisted Dec. 5, 1861, and was mustered out of service July of 1865.
He had taken an active part in Sherman's famous march through Georgia to the sea and had been retired as a lieutenant.
He came to California six months ago from Shelbyville, Ind., with his wife, Jennie and daughter, Hoay Pool. He leaves two other children in Indiana, Mrs. Ella Moffett and Al Pool.

James L. Pool died Tuesday night at a local hospital and the funeral services are being held this afternoon at the Janss & Ivers chapel. Mr. Pool, who came here six months ago with his wife and daughter, was 89 years of age, being a Civil War veteran, and had served as secretary to General Grant.
He is said to have been the sole survivor of Company K of the 49th regiment of Jeffersonville, Ind., having enlisted December 5, 1861, and being mustered out in July of 1865. He participated in Sherman's march through Georgia and had been retired with the rank of lieutenant.
