Of Ex-Supervisor John A. Montgomery
at His Home Near Snelling
The people of Merced county will be surprised to hear of the death of
Ex-Supervisor John A. Montgomery, which occurred at his residence in Snelling
on Thursday evening last, at 11 o'clock. The news of his death was received in
Merced with universal express of regret, and the Flag was at once placed at
half mast on the flag staff at the court house in respect in his memory. The
Facts relating to his death are very meager, and the only information that we
obtained was that he was thrown from a cart about a week ago and that he died
from the injuries that he received. Dr. E. S. O'Brien was called from Merced
for consultation Thursday afternoon, but up to the time of going to press, the
doctor had not returned.
John A. Montgomery was the eldest son of the late Hon. John Milton Montgomery,
who in 1875 was State Senator from this district. He was born at Snelling, in
this county, in 1860, and was 33 years of age at the time o his death. He was
raised and educated in the town of Snelling, and in 1882 purchased a farm of
130 acres and began giving his attention to the culture of fruits, in which
business he was very successful. In November, 1884, he was elected Supervisor
on the Democratic ticket and in November, 1888, was reelected. During his
eight years of a service as Supervisor he filled the office with much ability
and gave general satisfaction to his constituents and the tax payers of the
county. In December, 1890, he was united in marriage to Miss Addie Neighbor,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Neighbor, of Tuolumne county. The fruits of
this union is a son four or five months old. Mr. Montgomery was an affable and
genial gentleman, and his his untimely death is much regretted by the
community in which he lived, and by his many friends throughout the county.
The funeral will take place from his late residence, in Snelling, tomorrow.
Interment in the family plot in the Snelling cemetery.
