Tuesday rites for former police chief

LOS BANOS - Services for former Los Banos Chief of Police Robert H. (Bob) McSwain, 90, will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the Whitehurst Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Los Banos Cemetery. Mr. McSwain died Saturday in a Los Banos hospital.

A native of Madera, he moved to Los Banos in 1900 where he worked as a cowboy in his youth. He served as a Merced County deputy constable in 1929 and later was appointed chief of police, a position he held 25 years until his retirement in 1957.

He was named Man of the Year by the Los Banos Chamber of Commerce in 1979.

Survivors include a daughter, Katherine Ashley of Ben Lomond, five sons, Howard of Los Banos, Lee of Fresno, Newell of Oakland, Robert of Sacramento and Ecton of Virginia; a sister, Edna Martin of Los Banos; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
