Harriet Martin Haden, 84, of Castro Valley died Friday in St. John’s Kronstadt Convalescent Home.

Mrs. Haden was a native of Halifax County, Va. She graduated from Hollins College in 1938. She lived in Visalia 10 years and Merced 43 years before moving to Castro Valley 10 months ago. She was a homemaker.

She served as president and board member of the Women’s Association of the Central Presbyterian Church, and was a member of Church Women United, the American Association of University Women and the Stockton Presbyterian Association. She was one of the founders of the Merced Reading Is Fundamental program and for over 10 years was the sole representative of UNIVEF in Merced. She promoted support for the Equal Rights Amendment and was a member of the Religious Coalition for Abortion Rights in Northern California, a member of the Status of Women Committee of American Association of University Women and helped promote and raise money for the shelter for battered women in Merced County.

She helped establish Sierra Presbyterian Church in Merced.

She is survived by her children, Harriet Arvey of Houston, Robert Haden of Merced, and Catharine Ratto and Read Phillips both of Castro Valley; and eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Haden.

A funeral with be 2 P.M. Tuesday at Sierra Presbyterian Church, Merced, and burial at Plainsburg Cemetery, Plainsburg. Wilson Family Funeral Home, Atwater, in charge of arrangements.
