Merced's Dwight S. Ewing dies at 82.

Dwight S. Ewing, involved in a variety of activities in Merced for more than half a century -- including 46 years as a church elder and first president of the local chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons - died Thursday in a local hospital at 82.

Services are set for 10:30 a.m. Monday at Central Presbyterian Church with the Reverend John Watson conducting services. Entombment will be in Evergreen Mausoleum.

In 1974, Mr. Ewing received the Merced County Outstanding Senior Citizen Award.
Mr. Ewing's list of volunteer activities was lengthy. Most recently he was on the Merced County Home Health Agency Advisory Board. He worked with the Clothes Closet program for 19 years, was vice president for six years of the Merced County Historical Society and served on the Salvation Army Advisory Board, the Merced County Family and Children's Advisory Committee and Merced City Human Relations Commission.

In 1950-51, he was president of the Merced County Campfire Girl's Council and from 1970 to 1973 was president of the Mid Valley TB and Respiratory Disease Association. Other activities included Hospice, Open Air Theater, Angles on Wheels, Old Timers and Ecology Action Board.

He served as an elder for 46 years with Central Presbyterian, including several terms as clerk of session. He also belonged to the Merced Engineers Club, Jamboree Club and Writers and Scribblers Club.

Mr. Ewing was born Nov 12, 1907. He attended Le Grand High School, graduating in 1927, and the University of Nevada, Reno and California State University, Fresno.

His professional career included serving as a foreman for Fredrickson and Watson on the construction of the Mariposa-Catheys Valley Highway; 10 years with the Merced Irrigation District, including four years as co-water superintendent; 21 years as a supervisory hydrologic technician with the US Geological Survey, from 1948 to 1969; and 20 years at Stratford Evans Merced Funeral Chapel.

Surviving are his wife, Marie, whom he married Dec. 1, 1933; two daughters, Patricia Bow of New Hampshire and Karen Barstow of Ballico; two brothers, Earl Ewing of Santa Maria and Ralph Ewing of Merced, and five grandchildren.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday at Stratford Evans Merced Funeral Chapel, 1490 B St.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Central Presbyterian Church in Merced for Dwight S. Ewing, 82, a retired hydrologic technician who died Thursday in a local hospital.

The Rev. John Watson of Central Presbyterian Church will conduct services. Burial will be in Merced District Cemetery.

Mr. Ewing was born Nov. 12, 1907 in Hayesville, Ohio. He was a member of Central Presbyterian Church of Merced.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Ewing of Merced; two daughters, Patricia Hammond of Bow, N.H., and Karen Barstow of Turlock; two brothers, Earl Ewing of Santa Maria and Ralph Ewing of Merced; five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Friends may call from noon until 9 p.m. Sunday and before services Monday at the chapel.

The family would appreciate memorial contributions to the Central Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund or the Merced Senior Citizens or a charity of the donor's choice. It may be left at the funeral chapel.
