Sam Applegate Dead
Sam Applegate, one of the old citizens of Merced, died at his home in West
Merced Thursday last at the age of 54 years. Mr. Applegate was a native of Ohio
and has resided in Merced for twenty years or more. His death was caused from
dropsy.
Sam Applegate has been a familiar person around town for years. He was a butcher
by calling and was for a long while in the employ of Sawyer Bros. of the Pioneer
Meat Market, Main street, but the last five or six years has followed the
business of a tamale manufacture and his wagon could be seen on the coroner of
Main and Canal streets nearly every night in the year. Sam was a law abiding
citizen and his friends regret to learn of his death. He leaves a wife but no
children. The funeral will take place today from his late residence,
